Toronto based trio Language Arts have expanded into both the pop and the the psychedelic on their new album Able Island. The songs pay tribute to vocalist/guitarist Kristen Cudmore’s native Nova Scotia and it’s mysterious Sable Island. Listen to the Indie88 fan favourite ‘Neighbour’ here. Alabama Shakes vocalist Brittany Howard sets out on her own releasing her first solo record under the moniker Thunderbitch. The collection of 10 properly rock’n'roll songs acts as an amazing counterpoint to the band’s acclaimed 2015 album Sound & Color. Infected Mushroom have released the followup to 2003’s inaugural Converting Vegetarians which was the outfit’s fan-favorite and most successful LP to date. Featured on the album are vocal contributions from actress Sasha Grey on lead single ‘Fields of Grey.’
On Autre Ne Veut’s sophomore album ‘Age of Transparency’ Arthur Ashin pushes the vocabulary of soul to its horizons, incorporating choral music, electronic composition and the kinds of disfiguring production techniques that made his previous ‘Anxiety’ one of the most unusual albums of 2013. Ashin brings the album to Canada for the first time at Toronto’s The Hoxton October 20, buy tickets here.
MapleMusic Recordings are thrilled to announce the signing of the strikingly gifted singer/songwriter from Caledon – Megan Bonnell. Given four N’s by NOW Magazine and described as sounding “more than a little like Joni Mitchell, though the artist most immediately called to mind is Damien Rice” – her style is both ambient and affecting.
She has a tremendous gift for writing songs and she will be showcasing that skill when she releases her second full length record on MMR in 2016. Expect a breathtaking assembly of fetching tunes that will be infectious and haunting.
Bonnell’s generous voice has sung the world over – from San Francisco to Paris, she has connected to audiences with her unguarded lyrics and down-to-earth charm. A consummate performer with a bounty of talent, she is a welcome addition to the Maple family.
Album announcement and tour dates to come soon.
Last week San Fermin premiered their new song ‘No Devil’ which now appears as one of the bonus tracks on the deluxe edition of ‘Jackrabbit.’ The new track joins a Ra Ra Riot remix of the title track along with videos for ‘Emily’ and ‘Jackrabbit’ to round out the bonus material. For anyone who hasn’t picked up the album yet this is the perfect introduction to the band.
Pre-order ‘PAPER WHEELS’ HERE
Phish frontman Trey Anastasio has announced the release of his long awaited new album ‘
PAPER WHEELS’ – the multi-talented singer/musician/composer’s first new solo album in three years. Album is set for release on October 30 via Rubber Jungle/ATO Records and will be offered as a deluxe limited edition that will include 180 gram 45 RPM 2x LP splatter vinyl and a die cut gatefold package with six unique sleeves. Only 4,000 of these special packages will be manufactured.
Produced by Anastasio and longtime collaborator Bryce Goggin, ‘PAPER WHEELS’ was recorded last year at The Barn, the Phish founding guitarist’s Vermont farmhouse-turned-rehearsal space/recording studio. Anastasio and the members of Trey Anastasio Band (TAB) developed the material on stage while touring and sound-checking on the tour leading up to the sessions, allowing them to track the album in just under a week. Taking a cue from the energetic immediacy of classic Stax Studio recording sessions, TAB worked fast and loose, playing together live in The Barn and wrapping up tracks after one or two takes. Written and co-written by Anastasio alongside frequent lyric partners Tom Marshall and Steve “The Dude of Life” Pollak, songs like the funk-driven “Bounce” and the elegiac “Invisible Knife” (written solely by Anastasio) are among the legendarily diverse artist’s most infectious and inventive, alive with creative vigor, robust musicianship, and true soul power. The Wainwright Sisters (Martha Wainwright & Lucy Wainwright Roche) Announce Debut Album ‘Songs In The Dark’ Out November 13
The Wainwright Sisters will be releasing their anticipated debut album ‘Songs In The Dark‘ on November 13 via MapleMusic Recordings.
Although they’re sisters, Martha Wainwright and Lucy Wainwright Roche didn’t grow up together. Aside from genetics, their true bond was a musical one, both growing up in families steeped in songwriting. Both their mothers would sing them lullabies (Kate McGarrigle to Martha and Suzzy Roche to Lucy) – now to honour that, 30 years later, Martha and Lucy are singing many of these same songs, some penned by their mothers and father (Loudon Wainwright III) on ‘Songs In The Dark.’ Continue reading…

Lucero is set to release their new album ‘All A Man Should Do‘ on September 18 via ATO Records and MapleMusic Recordings.
This new album contains some of the most resonant lyrics Ben Nichols has ever written. They read like chapters from his life: the duality of relationships, getting older, finding where you want to be in this world and more. ”I was 15 years old in 1989,” Nichols explained. “This record sounds like the record I wanted to make when I was 15. It just took 25 years of mistakes to get it done.”
Lucero have included a cover close to their heartstrings on the new record: Big Star‘s ‘I’m In Love With A Girl’ and it features Big Star drummer Jody Stephens. Working with producer Ted Hutt (Old Crow Medicine Show, Flogging Molly) for a third time at Memphis’s Ardent Studios, the band felt comfortable enough to take some chances with a palette of new tones that sound understated yet powerful, bringing life to the stories behind the lyrics without overshadowing them. Sun Club‘s debut LP titled ‘The Dongo Durango‘ joyously deconstructs the traditional pop song and rebuilds it with off-kilter time signatures, gleefully unhinged vocals, and sunny hooks that sink deep into your already fevered brain. The record will be out October 30 via ATO Records and MapleMusic Recordings.
The members of Sun Club became a band as childhood friends over ten years ago and with the release of a well-received 7″ and EP have toured endlessly ever since, moving from basement gigs to bars to opening up shows for the likes of Alvvays, FIDLAR, and Fat White Family.
