Toronto’s very own fuzzed-out indie rock band Rival Boys have released their full-length debut ‘Animal Instincts’. The trio recorded the album at Revolution Recording Studios with Joe Dunphy who also recorded their ‘Ice Storm’ EP live off the floor earlier this year. Watch them shred ‘Fortune’ in an abandoned house in the video for the newest album single here. Legendary jam band Phish have returned with their 12th studio album ‘Fuego’. Originally reuniting out of genuinely wanting t hang out, eventually the band sat down to try to write in a way they never had before. Listen to guitarist Trey Anastasio and keyboardist Page McConnell talk about writing the songs across 5 notepads via NPR. Of course the only real way to experience Phish is live, check out their tour dates here to see if they hit your town. Vacationer return with their highly anticipated follow-up record ‘Relief’. The Philly-based group, consisting of The Starting Line’s Kenny Vasoli along with Body Language’s Matthew Young and Grant Wheeler, refine their months on the road into tighter and more powerful tracks. Watch the recently released video for the infectiously sunny ‘The Wild Life’. Cleveland alt-rock group SomeKindaWonderful have released their self-titled debut album. A short string of US dates has already been announced with a full tour in the works.
Royal Wood released his third full length ‘The Burning Bright’ this March and it is now available pressed on vinyl! Watch him perform the album track ‘White Flag’ live for CBC. Toronto’s Kristen Cudmore made her MMR debut earlier this year with Language Arts‘ album ‘Wonderkind’ which is also available now on vinyl. Watch the music video for the record’s title track here.
Dexter Tortoriello of Houses has followed up 2011′s ‘Blow’ EP with his debut solo LP ‘Still Life’ under the moniker Dawn Golden. The Fader premiered the video for lead single ‘All I Want’ about which Dexter said: ”We wanted to show the beauty and despair and impossible realities that might exist behind those moments of mania and delusion.” Dexter will head out on a North American tour in support of the record this Summer with dates to be announced soon. Dawn Golden ‘Still Life’ Digital CD Vinyl
Rodrigo y Gabriela play face to face, guitar versus guitar, bursting with melodic energy and rhythmic invention on their new album ’9 Dead Alive’. Their first record in 5 years celebrates individuals whose contributions to human rights, literature, and philosophy are still felt in the 21st century. Watch them play Somnium (inspired by Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz: 1651 – 1695) and Torito (inspired by animals and nature) live at Red Rocks. Americana legends Old 97′s return with their new album ‘Most Messed Up’ featuring guest appearances from Tommy Stinson (The Replacements) and Jon Rauhouse (Neko Case) on lap-steel. The record is a raucous 12-track meditation on 20 years in music which, through Rhett Miller’s lyrics, dives into deep wounds and emotional scars. See their Summer North American tour dates here.
Cold War Kids‘ much loved breakout debut album ‘Robbers & Cowards’ is being reissued on vinyl after being out of print for 5 years. The 2006 record will be pressed on 180g heavyweight vinyl, includes a digital download and extra artwork not included on the original pressing. Take at trip back to the late 00′s and watch the video for ‘Hang Me Up To Dry’. Brooklyn producer Mas Ysa dropped his debut ‘Worth EP’ earlier this year and it’s now available on vinyl. Watch the video for his Best New Track‘d lead single ‘Why’. Mas Ysa will return to Canada for the first time since releasing the EP in June for Toronto’s NXNE Festival.

New Releases – Chet Faker ‘Built On Glass’, Thought Beneath Film ‘Cartographers’ & Jessica Lea Mayfield ‘Make My Head Sing’
Chet Faker‘s highly anticipated debut LP ‘Built On Glass’ delivers as the follow up to his acclaimed 2012 EP ‘Thinking In Textures’. Chet first teased the release with the stop motion video for lead single ‘Talk Is Cheap’ on Noisey along with his upcoming North American dates. See the full dates including Toronto’s The Hoxton on May 19th here. Thought Beneath Film release their anticipated debut full length ‘Cartographers’. Mixed and mastered by Grammy winners Tom Lord-Alge and Bob Ludwig respectively, and approved by Toronto legend Alan Cross, the Hamilton band has some heavy hitting names behind it. Kent, Ohio’s Jessica Lea Mayfield makes her MMR debut with ‘Make My Head Sing’ her self-proclaimed real rock record. Stereogum premiered her song ‘I Wanna Love You’ in February calling it “a grunge-era deadpan with gnarly leftfield roots music in service of haunting, smoldering rock ’n’ roll.” Catch Jessica on tour as she comes through Toronto’s The Garrison April 23rd and Montreal’s Divan Orange April 24th.
Toronto’s Kristen Cudmore makes her MMR debut as Language Arts with the new album ‘Wonderkind’. Recorded with Grammy-nominated producer Darryl Neudorf, fans got their first taste of the record with the title track’s stop-motion video. Primo Sketch Comedy group created a hilarious infomercial for the record, watch it here. Join Language Arts for their album release show April 10 at the Horseshoe Tavern. Kaiser Chiefs return with their fifth studio album and first since the departure of Nick Hodgson, ‘Education, Education, Education and War’. The band paired with producer Ben H. Allen III (Gnarls Barkley, Animal Collective, Deerhunter) who said of working on the record “They came really ready to prove something to the world, and the songs are really good. New Releases – The Belle Brigade ‘Just Because’ & Various Artists ‘Bob Dylan in the 80s: Volume One’
The Belle Brigade make their MMR debut with their sophomore studio album ‘Just Because’. The album’s infectious single ‘Ashes’ dropped earlier this year whose video features the crafty sibling duo cut into stop motion. The California band recently announced a full North American tour supporting Ray LaMontagne as both his backing band and opening act. Built To Spill, Reggie Watts, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Lucius, Carl Broemel of My Morning Jacket and many more come together on ‘Bob Dylan in the 80s: Volume One’ which spans 1980′s ‘Saved’ to 1990′s ‘Under The Red Sky’. The tribute album aims to showcase Dylan during an off-peak period and bring a stronger sense of harmony to the material. Portions of proceeds from album sales will go to the charity Pencils of Promise, a non-profit organization that builds schools and increases educational opportunities in the developing world. Alabama’s legendary roots rockers Drive-By Truckers enter the double digits with their 10th studio album ‘English Oceans’. The record’s 13 tracks show an almost equal split of writing credits between co-front men Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley, watch the band perform Cooley’s track ‘Made Up English Oceans’ in the Lyric Theater in Birmingham, Alabama. The boys are on a North American tour right now supported by Blitzen Trapper and Shovels & Rope, see full dates here. Ume (pronounced “Ooo-May”) make their MMR debut with ‘Monuments‘. The Austin band play the hard rock equivalent of IDM layering meaty chords and ripping lead lines with melodic keyboard. Listen to the first single to drop from ‘Monuments’ titled ‘Chase It Down’. The very first song SomeKindaWonderful recorded together, ‘Reverse’ premiered yesterday on Idolator and is now up on iTunes. Frontman Jordy Towers tells Idolator “‘Reverse’ is a story song told in reverse. It’s a true story actually … Something about telling a story in reverse is almost more emotional and revealing to me and it just naturally came out in that form when I wrote it.”
