New Releases: Marcus Marr & Chet Faker ‘Work EP’, and Chet Faker ‘Built On Glass’ Limited Edition Pink Vinyl

Over the past few years, a musical admiration between Chet Faker and Marcus Marr has grown, which culminated in a four-day sojourn in Marr’s South London studio earlier this year. The recording session lasted less than a week and the two discovered that Marr’s powerful, punchy dance production perfectly balanced Faker’s soulful vocals. The result is the 4-track EP ‘Work,’ out now via Faker’s imprint, Detail Records and comes to MMR through Downtown Records/Fontana North. Chet Faker also re-releases his critically-acclaimed full-length debut Built On Glass on limited edition Pink Vinyl in support of Ten Bands One Cause.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard Release ‘Paper Mâché Dream Balloon’

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard is one of the most difficult bands to pin down. The Australian-based garage rock septet follows their collective muse wherever it chooses to lead them and for their seventh record they followed it to an all-acoustic opus titled ‘Paper Mâché Dream Balloon,’ released November 13, 2015 via ATO Records and MapleMusic Recordings.

While embracing the limitations of their choice of only acoustic sounds, KGATLW were able to get a little experimental as well. To fill it out, they borrowed a batch of instruments that they had never played before-clarinet, double bass, and cello, among them-and eked sounds and melodies out of them. That only helps to add to joyous jumble that is ‘Paper Mâché Dream Balloon.’ The result is a lovely, lilting pop masterpiece that still evokes the same intoxicating exuberance as KGATLW’s most recent work, but with a more pastoral, communal feel to it.

“Some of the most charming garage rock of the past five years” – KCRW

A pastoral psych-pop breeze laden with flutes and spiraling harmonies … just press play and let it win you over.” – Stereogum

“While Paper Mache’s rootsier sound, lush orchestration and Their Satanic Majesties Request twist on psychedelia will likely net the group a wider audience, they are already thinking of ways to appease fans of their extended jam sessions and punishing grooves.” – Relix

New Releases: The Wainwright Sisters, King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard & The Most Serene Republic

Although they’re sisters, Martha Wainwright and Lucy Wainwright Roche didn’t grow up together. Songs In The Dark sees the pair covering songs sang to them as lullabies, including many penned by their mothers and father as well as the likes of Simon & Garfunkel,  Woody Guthrie, and Jimmie Rogers. On their latest opus psych/garage/kraut-rock band King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard have record 12 songs entirely using acoustic instruments. Acoustic guitars, flute, double bass, fiddle, harmonica, drum kit, clarinet and whatever they could find comes together in the lovely, lilting pop masterpiece that is Paper Mâché Dream Balloon. It has been a half-decade since The Most Serene Republic released new material and the Toronto sextet returns triumphantly with Mediac. From the anthemic horns of debut single “Ontario Morning” to raucous grooves of  album closer “The Feels” this record is sure to please old fans and create plenty of new ones.
