Critically acclaimed LA-based band Wildcat! Wildcat! are set to release their highly anticipated, self-titled debut EP September 10 on Downtown Records and MapleMusic Recordings. The band garnered critical praise for their previously released sold-out limited addition 7″ on the taste-making label Neon Gold Records, including early support from BBC Radio 1 in the U.K. TIME raves, “I love the staccato electronic rock, I love the frantic opening measures, I love the fleeting falsetto in the background,” while NYLON furthers,”Undoubtedly one of the best tracks we’ve heard all year…these guys certainly have more in store for 2013.” To celebrate the release, the band will embark on a North American tour starting in September.

The new EP was written and produced by the band in their home studios over the course of the last year and a half.  Of the songs Jesse Carmichael (vocals, drums) notes, “Some came quicker than others but all of them provided us the time to try out different processes of collaboration and understand how and why we make the kind of music that we make together.”

Wildcat! Wildcat! is Jesse Taylor (vocals, bass), Michael Wilson (vocals, keys) and Carmichael. The trio played together in various incarnations before officially forming Wildcat! Wildcat! in 2012. The band has toured extensively including SXSW, a sold out west coast headlining run and major U.S. support slots with Alt-J and Portugal. The Man.

Butter The Children Announces New EP ‘True Crime’ With Downtown Records & MapleMusic Recordings Out On August 20, 2013

butter the children
Listen To Their First Single ‘Spit It Out’ HERE!

Butter The Children, a four-piece post-punk group of indie lifers from Brooklyn, is your new favorite band if you like your rock with both fangs and pop ambition. Fronted by Inna Mkrtycheva, the band includes Ray Weiss on guitar, J Boxer on bass, and Jordyn Blakely on drums.

Built from the seeds of countless cool-kid favorites (Sweet Bulbs, Night Manager, Fiasco, Le Rug) and the dust of deep-borough warehouse venues, Butter The Children successfully summons the ghosts of underground rock music history like few of their contemporaries.

On their debut EP True Crime, the band mixes the textured melancholy of The Smiths, C86 bands’ jangly guitars, the violently gauzy levitation of My Bloody Valentine and early Blondie’s sweetly-punk melodicism into a refreshingly loud, dangerous and pop-conscious dagger.

True Crime feels like those perfect old punk albums where there’s no excess – just a sugary dose of loud guitars, muscular bass, tsunami drums and morose lyrics about dejected wanderers.

J. Roddy Walston & The Business Announce Fall Tour And Reveal Cover Art

Pre-Order Their Album ‘Essential Tremors’ HERE

Watch The Brand New “Heavy Bells” Live Teaser HERE

The third album from J. Roddy Walston & The Business, ‘Essential Tremors‘ borrows its name from a nervous-system disorder that’s long plagued the band’s frontman. “It’s this condition where my hands shake, sometimes not at all, but sometimes pretty bad,” says singer/pianist/guitarist Walston. “I’ve referenced it throughout all our records in some way, but it made sense to be more open about it on this album, which is partly about owning and embracing your weirdness instead of letting it hold you captive because you don’t even want to talk about it.”

For J. Roddy Walston & The Business, who formed in 2002 in Walston’s hometown of Cleveland, Tennessee, embracing weirdness means a mumble-out-loud celebration of that great and terrible burden of being human. Forcing the oft-clashing worlds of art and rock-and-roll to make nice, the band (including guitarist/vocalist Billy Gordon, bassist/vocalist Logan Davis, and drummer Steve Colmus) deals in a scrappy yet sublime sound that honours both their Southern roots and punk spirit. On ‘Essential Tremors’ J. Roddy Walston & The Business builds off that formula with a mix of heavy hooks and elegant melodies revealing their affinity for artists as disparate as Led Zeppelin, pre-disco-era Bee Gees, The Replacements, Randy Newman, and the Southern soul outfits that once populated the Stax Records label.

Co-produced by Matt Wignall (Delta Spirit, Cold War Kids) and Grammy-winning producer/engineer Mark Neill (The Black Keys) at Neill’s own Soil of the South Studios (a Valdosta, Georgia-based facility where J. Roddy Walston & The Business were the first to ever record), the follow-up to 2010′s much-acclaimed self-titled sophomore album also finds the band crafting lyrics that ultimately serve as a secret language to the initiated listener.

“It seems like most bands write for either the animal side of people or for the side that’s more in tune with the spirit or even just the psyche, but we tend to just smash all those things together,” says Walston. “It’s like we’re writing religious songs for the animal side. We’ve got songs that feel like party songs but if you look at it closer, it’s something more cerebral. So for the people who want to dig in and connect all the weird crosswires, the song can turn into something else.” And because J. Roddy Walston & The Business is practiced in the art of subversion, he adds, “these are songs you can get away with listening to around ‘the straights.’ The danger is in what lies behind the codes and the prose, and how gently they unravel once you’ve digested them.”

j roddy

Endlessly shifting from snarling and stompy to warm and soulful-and often encompassing all of the above within the same note, ’Essential Tremors’ opens with “Heavy Bells,” a powerhouse lead single that starts out breezy then gives way to a blistering chorus that threatens to rip Walston’s sweetly ragged vocals right open. The album amps up that brutal energy on songs like “Hard Times” (an epic anthem built on a mercilessly driving bassline) and “Sweat Shock” (a track that comes off like dance-floor war cry for Native American metalheads), while “Marigold” keeps it blissfully catchy and “Black Light” offers a glammed-up bedroom boogie that could be the soundtrack to a metaphysical seduction scene.  Even when turning tender (such as on the heart-on-sleeve serenade “Boys Can Never Tell,” the harmony-soaked “Nobody Knows,” and the album-closing stunner “Midnight Cry”), Essential Tremors burns with a raw passion that’s nothing short of glorious.

Releasing their debut EP ‘Here Comes Trouble’ in 2002, J. Roddy Walston & The Business relocated to Baltimore in 2004 after Walston’s then-girlfriend (and now wife) began studying opera at the Peabody Conservatory of Music. Along with putting out their first full-length album (2007′s Hail Mega Boys), the band devoted the next few years to earning a reputation as an incendiary live act that devotees aptly liken to “AC/DC fronted by Jerry Lee Lewis.” Along with touring with the likes of The Black Keys, Lucero and the Lumineers, J. Roddy Walston & The Business have brought their joyfully chaotic performance to such festivals as Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, and Bonnaroo.

Melting all manner of stereotypes into an as-yet-unnamed breed of New American, each performance finds hipsters hugging Teamsters and sweating till it hurts, and art-school cynics and metalheads screaming out every lyric in some gorgeously desperate attempt to connect. There seems to be a competition between the band and the crowd as to who will give more each night. To attempt that connection for yourself, check out the band on their upcoming fall tour; all dates are listed below.

dan brownrigg

‘It Takes All Kinds (to make this world, I find) is the unique
tinyrecordscanadaMapleMusic Recordings debut from
the multi-talented east-coaster, Don Brownrigg and is set for
release on October 22, 2013.

With a full length album already under his belt (he released Wander Songs on weewerk in 2007) Brownrigg is an expert in bringing his charisma to the live stage.   He has a rich voice, filled with experience and wisdom, and he enthrals audiences with his storytelling and eloquent serenades.

In a country known for multi-talented singer/songwriters, the Halifax-based Brownrigg (via Codroy Valley, Newfoundland) has written 10 honest and vivid songs resulting in an absolutely stunning album.  Recorded in Nova Scotia over a two-year time span with producer Daniel Ledwell (Jenn Grant) at the helm, the album exudes both commerciality (Sweet Dream Sleeper/When The Heart Resigns) and credibility (Fight For Your Castle/No Smoke, No Gun) at the same time. The record also showcases the wide range of musicality of the pairing – with Daniel contributing trumpet, trombone, bass, guitar, keyboard and whistle skills – while Don took the lead with vocals, guitar, piano, keyboard and accordion.

A virtuoso performer who has toured with the likes of Serena Ryder, Shawn Colvin and Great Lake Swimmers – Brownrigg has set himself apart with his captivating honesty and take on life. “There’s love, there’s loss, there’s hope, there’s regret,” says Brownrigg. “There’s seriousness and there’s silliness. I like it that way. It keeps you thinking about the good and the bad in everything. It takes all kinds.”

About tinyrecordscanada:
tinyrecordscanada is a brand new indie label started by industry veteran William “Skinny” Tenn (William Tenn Management/Songplugger/Hardwood) and is known for working with key talent like Hayden, Cuff The Duke, and Ron Hawkins/Lowest of the Low. This will be the first release from tinyrecordscanada, which also includes an exciting new licensing venture with MapleMusic Recordings.  Expect even more from tiny in early 2014 when they will be releasing the epic new album from Rival Boys.

New York’s Caveman released their self-titled sophomore record earlier this year in the US and it is out now via their new Canadian home MMR. The melodic, melancholic guitar swells and passionately delivered vocal lines make for an album that’s very pleasing to vibe with. I caught them on the Toronto date of their tour with Rogue Wave and the record is reproduced beautifully live.

Typhoon is excited to premiere the first single “Young Fathers” from their anticipated new album “White Lighter.”

“White Lighter” – out August 20th – is the follow up to the band’s EP A New Kind Of House that caught the attention of countless music critics and listeners for its inspiring hybrid of literate lyrics and wide ranging pop music.

Typhoon will head out on a North America headlining tour beginning September 5th in their hometown of Portland, OR. This six-week tour will include performances at the Austin City Limits Music Festival, Pop Montreal and Music Fest NW, along with stops in New York, Los Angeles and Vancouver. Tour dates below.

What makes these songs so great is the sense of borrowed time and urgency. A series of events suffered from a bug bite - failed organs, life spared thanks to modern medicine and a kidney given to him by his father - Kyle Morton, the band’s lead singer and songwriter, channeled his emotions into songwriting to create this big-hearted sound that bursts with a raw emotion and energy. The end result is a remarkably powerful and beautiful collection of songs.

“When we started working on White Lighter, I had reason to believe that it would be the last thing I ever did,” says Kyle. “It is now six months since we finished. I’m still here and there’s still work to be done.”

Dreams of Cannibalism” comes from the band’s upcoming album White Lighter out August 20th on Roll Call Records and MapleMusic Recordings.

White Lighter is the follow up to the bands acclaimed EP A New Kind Of House that caught the attention of countless music critics and listeners for it’s inspiring hybrid of literate lyrics and wide ranging pop music.

Recorded by the band in the isolation of Pendarvis Farm in Happy Valley, Oregon, Typhoon freed themselves from outside distractions to arrange and record this album full of horns, strings and group vocal crescendos. Ultimately creating an impressive collection that will establish this 12-piece collective as an immensely creative force.

Already confirmed for this year’s Austin City Limits Music Festival, Pop Montreal and Music Fest NW, Typhoon will set out on a US headlining tour this fall. Tour to be announced shortly.

Typhoon spent most of 2011 on the road – sharing the stage with The Decemberists, The Shins & Explosions In The Sky and performing at festivals such as Lollapalooza, Osheaga and the Newport Folk Festival – winning over concertgoers with what KEXP calls an “awe inspiring” live show.

Stereophonics Return To North America With Their Chart Topping UK Album ‘Graffiti On The Train’ Which Will Be Released August 20th

North American Tour Kicks Off This September

One of the most durable and consistently successful bands ever to come out of the U.K. band scene, Stereophonics return to North America August 20th with the release of their chart topping U.K. album ‘Graffiti on the Train‘; their eighth studio album, out on MapleMusic Recordings and their own Stylus Records.

Released earlier this year in the U.K., ‘Graffiti on the Train’ entered the U.K. charts at number 3 and has remained in the Top 20 ever since. Affirming that this is their best album in a decade, the album has quickly gone gold and is well on its way to platinum status.

Written by lead vocalist and guitarist Kelly Jones and produced by Kelly Jones and Jim Lowe, ‘Graffiti on the Train’ is the final piece in the puzzle for a newly refined and cinematic Stereophonics, a band that has London’s Sunday Times calling this album their “least conventional yet”, praising its “newfound lightness of touch” and confirming “The album contains Jones’s best work of his career.”

A storyteller first and foremost Kelly Jones unravels storylines and sketches characters with poetic finesse – inspired by the screenplay he has been working on of the same name, ‘Graffiti On The Train’ is a fascinating, filmic LP unlike anything the group have attempted in the past. Loosely telling the story of two friends who flee the country after a tragic accident, the record is both reflective and surprisingly fragile.

We find Jones at the helm of all the videos from this album, which he has both written and directed including the first North American single, ‘Indian Summer.’ Upon release in the U.K. earlier this year, ‘Indian Summer’marked the band’s 26th Top 40 hit on the U.K. charts.

Having spanned decades of success selling over 9 million career albums and currently sitting at the top of U.K. album charts, this return to the other side of the pond is a tour not to be missed. Their North American tour kicks off in Philadelphia on September 19 at the Theatre of Living Arts. See below for complete tour itinerary. As one of the best live bands imported from the U.K. in the last twenty years, North America will be treated to select tour dates and an Indian Summer to be remembered. At a recent U.K. show, John Earls of the Daily Star noted, “Girls sat on their boyfriends shoulders, Welsh flags were held aloft, beer was thrown everywhere and the singalongs kept coming.”

Caveman Announce New Album ‘CAVEMAN’ Out on July 9th

Tagged with , ,

Play Toronto’s Mod Club With Rogue Wave On June 25th!

On their self-titled sophomore album, Caveman stretch their legs in a number of different, albeit cohesive, directions. Their highly anticipated return will come out exclusively on iTunes on June 25th and will be hitting all other physical and digital stores on July 9th via MapleMusic Recordings.

Caveman -a five-man vibe collective from NYC- released their first album in 2011. As first albums go, CoCo Beware was something akin to a moody statement of intent, a blueprint for a band quickly learning how to create horizon-wide rock songs that were equal parts intimate and expansive. Initially self-released and later snatched up by Fat Possum for re-release in early 2012, the record brims over with four-part harmonies, crystalline guitar lines, and tracks that see-sawed between echoey lullaby (“A Country’s King of Dreams”) to shoegaze-by-way-of classic-FM-radio sprawl (“Old Friend”). The album quickly elevated Caveman from local band to watch to a sizable touring draw and formidable live act, as evidenced by stints on the road with the likes of The War on DrugsWhite Rabbits and Built to Spill. Despite being the work of a brand new band, CoCo Beware displayed a kind of Zen-like ease. It was the sound a five

“We all went up to Jimmy’s grandmother’s place in New Hampshire,” says singer Matthew Iwanusa. “That’s where the new record kind of started. It was literally the attic of her barn, lit up by Christmas lights. We’d all sit in this one room together and one by one we’d all go into the bathroom and record ourselves making the most psycho noises possible. It actually felt kind of like a weird breakthrough. We were all confident and comfortable enough with each other to try out these experiments, which extended itself into the making of the new record…which is really just an evolution of this vibe that we’d been cultivating for long time.”

With that, the guys holed up in Brooklyn’s Rumpus Room to start recording in earnest with Nick Stumpf (who produced the band’s debut album) and Albert Di Fiore behind the controls. The album is a kind of sonic microcosm-a series of emotional yet tough mini-narratives operating within the same quixotic musical universe.
As a result, the guitars on Caveman are bigger and more expansive, the rhythm section is tighter and more adventurous, the keyboards more opaque and pronounced. Like a marriage between Tangerine Dream, late period Slowdive, and Lindsey Buckingham, tracks like their new single “In the City” and “Ankles” boast synth lines that sound simultaneously retro and futuristic, while “Pricey” and “Never Want to Know” overflow with guitar sounds that could have miraculously floated off an old Cure album. It should be noted that James Carbonetti, the band’s primary guitar player, also happens to be one of the most highly regarded guitar makers in New York City.

And while Caveman’s music could certainly operate on the level of dreamy soundscape and still be excellent, the depth of feeling in front man Matthew Iwanusa’s lyrics helps weave the songs deeply into your memory. When Iwanusa sings Where’s the time to waste on someone else’s life? on “Where’s the Time,” it’s hard not to read between the lines. Wonder and regret seem to fuel the record in almost equal measure.
