Toronto’s very own fuzzed-out indie rock band Rival Boys have released their full-length debut ‘Animal Instincts’. The trio recorded the album at Revolution Recording Studios with Joe Dunphy who also recorded their ‘Ice Storm’ EP live off the floor earlier this year. Watch them shred ‘Fortune’ in an abandoned house in the video for the newest album single here. Exclaim! also had them perform the raucous number ‘Sober & Single’ live at The Piston in Toronto for their Exclaim! TV series, watch it here.

New Releases – Silversun Pickups ‘The Singles Collection’, Rival Boys ‘Ice Storm’ EP & Mike Gordon ‘Overstep’
Ahead of their fourth studio album, the follow up to 2012’s ‘Neck Of The Woods’, Silversun Pickups look back at the musical milestones of their journey so far with ‘The Singles Collection’. The limited edition box set features the California band’s biggest hits, from ‘Lazy Eye’ to the freshly released ‘Cannibal’ pressed on 7″ vinyl. The set also includes the vinyl-exclusive track ‘Devil’s Cup’, a previously-unreleased song from the ‘Swoon’ sessions. Enter Exclaim!’s contest to win a copy of the collection here. Bassist and founding member of Phish, Mike Gordon releases his fourth solo album ‘Overstep’. A diverse but tightly knit family of sturdy rock numbers, the album features longtime collaborator Scott Murawski, legendary drummer Matt Chamberlain and is produced by Paul Q. Kolderie. The lush guitars and welcoming vocal harmonies of opener ‘Ether’ serve as an invitation to come along for a 49-minute “reality check.” Rival Boys make their MMR debut with the ‘Ice Storm’ EP, recorded in a single day at Toronto’s Revolution Recording Studios. The trio’s blend of harmonized vocals, violins, guitar, bass and propulsive drums provides stripped-down exciting rock with a punch, as heard on ‘Sober & Single’. The five track EP acts as a lead-up to their full-length album ‘animal instincts’ due for release in May. Join Rival Boys at The Silver Dollar Room February 28th for their EP release party.
The title of Rival Boys‘ new EP is self-explanatory.
Recorded in a single live-off-the-floor session on Jan. 8, 2014 – as their hometown of Toronto was still recovering from a paralyzing winter blast – Ice Storm‘s five tracks showcase the band’s raw power and set the stage for the release of the full-length LP, animal instincts, this May.
Rival Boys features the sister/brother pairing of Lee and Graeme Rose, backed by the propulsive drumming of Sam Sholdice. The group’s distinctive sound revolves around the dynamic chemistry the three members have developed in an incredibly short space of time. The Rose siblings’ shared lead vocals create a consistent level of glorious tension within the songs, while on stage Lee’s ability to simultaneously sing and play both bass and electric violin (in tandem with bass pedals), offers a sonic range few trios can match.
