Alabama’s legendary roots rockers Drive-By Truckers enter the double digits with their 10th studio album ‘English Oceans’. The record’s 13 tracks show an almost equal split of writing credits between co-front men Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley, watch the band perform Cooley’s track ‘Made Up English Oceans’ in the Lyric Theater in Birmingham, Alabama. The boys are on a North American tour right now supported by Blitzen Trapper and Shovels & Rope, see full dates here. Ume (pronounced “Ooo-May”) make their MMR debut with ‘Monuments‘. The Austin band play the hard rock equivalent of IDM layering meaty chords and ripping lead lines with melodic keyboard. Listen to the first single to drop from ‘Monuments’ titled ‘Chase It Down’. The very first song SomeKindaWonderful recorded together, ‘Reverse’ premiered yesterday on Idolator and is now up on iTunes. Frontman Jordy Towers tells Idolator “‘Reverse’ is a story song told in reverse. It’s a true story actually … Something about telling a story in reverse is almost more emotional and revealing to me and it just naturally came out in that form when I wrote it.”

New Releases – Silversun Pickups ‘The Singles Collection’, Rival Boys ‘Ice Storm’ EP & Mike Gordon ‘Overstep’
Ahead of their fourth studio album, the follow up to 2012′s ‘Neck Of The Woods’, Silversun Pickups look back at the musical milestones of their journey so far with ‘The Singles Collection’. The limited edition box set features the California band’s biggest hits, from ‘Lazy Eye’ to the freshly released ‘Cannibal’ pressed on 7″ vinyl. The set also includes the vinyl-exclusive track ‘Devil’s Cup’, a previously-unreleased song from the ‘Swoon’ sessions. Enter Exclaim!’s contest to win a copy of the collection here. Bassist and founding member of Phish, Mike Gordon releases his fourth solo album ‘Overstep’. A diverse but tightly knit family of sturdy rock numbers, the album features longtime collaborator Scott Murawski, legendary drummer Matt Chamberlain and is produced by Paul Q. Kolderie. The lush guitars and welcoming vocal harmonies of opener ‘Ether’ serve as an invitation to come along for a 49-minute “reality check.” Rival Boys make their MMR debut with the ‘Ice Storm’ EP, recorded in a single day at Toronto’s Revolution Recording Studios. The trio’s blend of harmonized vocals, violins, guitar, bass and propulsive drums provides stripped-down exciting rock with a punch, as heard on ‘Sober & Single’. The five track EP acts as a lead-up to their full-length album ‘animal instincts’ due for release in May. Join Rival Boys at The Silver Dollar Room February 28th for their EP release party.
Listen to ‘I Wanna Love You’ HERE
Kent, Ohio native Jessica Lea Mayfield matches a grunge-era deadpan with gnarly leftfield roots music in service of haunting, smoldering rock ‘n’ roll.
She caught some extra attention thanks to her association with geographic and stylistic neighbor Dan Auerbach of Akron’s Black Keys, who produced her 2011 LP ‘Tell Me.’ But Mr. Ultraviolence wasn’t involved in ‘Make My Head Sing…,’ out April 15 on ATO Records/MapleMusic Recordings. Rather, she bunkered down in a Nashville studio with bassist/husband Jesse Newport in search of something stripped-down yet weighty.
As Mayfield explains, “The whole record is just me and Jesse and my drummer Matt Martin. I think a lot of my favorite bands are guitar, bass and drums. I wanted to simplify things. Bands are so big these days, I wanted to get in the studio and make a rock record and hear real guitar tones and something heavy.” Real guitar tones and heaviness abound on ‘I Wanna Love You,’ the album’s darkly entrancing single.

“Some songs are made to fill summer stadiums as the last light falls over the crowd. Kaiser Chief’s new single “Coming Home” is one of them… reminiscent of David Byrne’s best work” - GQ
“Anthemic and immediately catchy.” - A.V. Club
“There’s an extraordinary moment when a third unfamiliar tune, ‘Coming Home,’ a U2/Kings of Leon-ish stadium-sized ballad, prompts an unexpected singalong.” - The Guardian
(Feb. 20, 2014) Today, Kaiser Chiefs unveil the music video for ‘Coming Home’ on VEVO. The song is their first single from their upcoming album, and was revealed on A.V. Club last week. ‘Education, Education, Education & War’, the band’s fifth album, will be released on April 1st, 2014 via ATO Records/MapleMusic Recordings. The ten-track collection was written in London, Los Angeles and Nashville, recorded at The Maze Studio in Atlanta, Georgia and mixed at Electric Lady Studios by Michael Brauer (My Morning Jacket, Coldplay) with producer Ben H. Allen III (Gnarls Barkley, Animal Collective, Deerhunter).
Americana legends Old 97′s return April 29 with their first album in partnership with MapleMusic Recordings/ATO Records, for ‘Most Messed Up.’
The record is a revealing, 12-track meditation on 20 years in music that finds them at their raucous, boozy best. It’s “a rock opera, a way-off Broadway musical about a musician’s life, loves and lubrication,” says music critic Bill Flanagan. Recorded in Austin and produced by Salim Nourallah, ‘Most Messed Up’ also features guest appearances by Tommy Stinson (The Replacements, Guns N’ Roses) and Jon Rauhouse (Neko Case) on lap-steel.
LISTEN to ‘Made Up English Oceans’ and WATCH exclusive acoustic performance via WSJ Speakeasy HERE
Alabama’s legendary roots rockers Drive-By Truckers return on March 4 with ‘English Oceans,’ their 10th studio album, and first since 2011′s ‘Go-Go Boots.’
The record’s 13 tracks show an almost equal split of writing credits between co-front men Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley, with the first song to be shared, ‘Made Up English Oceans,’ composed by the latter.
The band recently filmed an acoustic performance of ‘Made Up English Oceans’ at the currently-under-renovation Lyric Theater in Birmingham, Alabama. “As it is, it’s like a time capsule offering an example of the beauty of a bygone era, and the ugliness of the segregated society it was part of,” Cooley told Speakeasy. “I thought it made a perfect setting for a song about how using beliefs, fears and prejudices to acquire power still works as well as ever.”
Montreal-born producer Thomas Arsenault makes his MapleMusic Recordings debut as Mas Ysa with his ‘Worth’ EP. The album’s first single ‘Why’ received Best New Track from Pitchfork ahead of the hockey-themed & self-directed video featuring his brother Nicholas Arsenault. Mas Ysa (pronounced MAAS ee-sa) will head out on a West Coast tour with Lawrence Rothman in February and comes to Toronto for NXNE in June.
Everyone’s favourite story-teller Les Claypool has paired with his old buddy Bryan Kehoe as Duo De Twang to release their debut record ‘Four Foot Shack’. Featuring covers ranging from the best of the Primus catalogue (‘Jerry Was A Racecar Driver’ & ‘Winona’s Big Brown Beaver’) to Bee Gees ‘Stayin’ Alive’ and Alice In Chains ‘Man in The Box’ all recorded in the signature foot-stomping Americana style. “It was very live,” admits Les. “In fact, it was a little difficult, with all the bleed of the stomping and the bass and the vocals. Every now and again you can hear the studio refrigerator come on or the dog barking at something outside in the background. Once it was there, you had to kind of leave it.” Duo De Twang tour the U.S. in March along with a stop at the SXSW festival that month.
ATO Records and MapleMusic Recordings are excited to announce the April 29 release of acoustic rock maestros Rodrigo y Gabriela‘s new studio album 9 Dead Alive, the band’s first record of new material in five years. It was recorded and produced by Rod and Gab at their studio in Ixtapa, Mexico. Mixing was handled by Andrew Scheps (Black Sabbath, Adele, Metallica, Lana Del Rey) in Los Angeles.
9 Dead Alive sees Rodrigo y Gabriela playing face to face, guitar versus guitar, bursting with melodic energy and rhythmic invention. The album captures the warmth and spontaneity of two great musicians locked in together; perfectly distilled into nine new songs teeming with desire, elegance and gusto.
San Fermin‘s current tour in support of their latest release, ’Live From The Advent Lutheran Church NYC‘ EP and self-titled debut, will bring them to Canada in February. The Brooklyn-based baroque rockers will play Casa del Popolo in Montreal on Feb. 14, The Garrison in Toronto on Feb. 15, and the Biltmore Cabaret in Vancouver on Feb. 28. In addition on Feb. 14, the band will perform live on CBC Radio’s Q with Jian Ghomeshi.
Formed by composer and songwriter Ellis Ludwig-Leone in 2011, San Fermin’s self-titled 2013 album — recorded at the Banff Centre in Alberta — was called “…a jarringly accomplished debut” by NPR, while Pitchfork described the album’s first single, ‘Sonsick,’ as “deliriously infectious.”
MapleMusic Recordings is proud to announce its latest signing, Montreal-born visionary pop auteur Thomas Arsenault, better known as Mas Ysa [pronounced MAAS ee-sa]. His first single, “Why” is accompanied by a Purple Milk-produced video, which he co-directed with Natalia Leite. It was shot near Arsenault’s current home of Woodstock NY, showing a conflict-laden relationship being hashed out in a dark hockey rink.
A restless spirit, Arsenault developed his craft in the Sao Paulo rave scene, and by working with avant garde artists in Ohio and San Francisco before landing in Brooklyn in 2012. There, he created Mas Ysa and established a reputation as an intensely cathartic composer and live performer. This resulted in invitations to support the likes of Purity Ring, RZA and Deerhunter, as well as producing albums for Cass McCombs and Laurel Halo in his loft studio.
At the start of 2013, Mas Ysa relocated to Woodstock where he began recording himself in earnest. His first EP, Worth, encompasses bangers, ballads and textured experimental arcs. The Best New Track’d “Why,” a futuristic arms-to-the-sky “Thunder Road,” is the first taste of the record, set to be released Feb. 4, 2014. Worth also brings Arsenault’s talents as a singer-songwriter to the forefront on “Years” and “Life Way Up From” — both haunting, glacial odes to fear, loss, and life on the run.
Mas Ysa has already been confirmed as featured artist at the 2014 North By Northeast Festival in Toronto where he will make his formal Canadian live debut.

ATO Records and MapleMusic Recordings will release Mike Gordon‘s new solo album, Overstep, on February 25, 2014. Gordon shared songwriting duties with guitarist and longtime collaborator Scott Murawski and handed over the producing reins for the first time in his solo career, enlisting Paul Q. Kolderie (Radiohead, Uncle Tupelo, Pixies). He also invited a few new players into the studio, including legendary drummer Matt Chamberlain (Jon Brion, Fiona Apple).
Gordon will celebrate the release of Overstep with a North American headline tour that will kick off at the Westcott Theatre in Syracuse, NY on February 28. The run will include a date at the Rio Theatre in Vancouver, BC (March 22). The bassist/vocalist will be joined on the road by his longtime band – Scott Murawski (guitar), Craig Myers (percussion), Tom Cleary (keyboards) and Todd Isler (drums). The new repertoire will be augmented by hints of secret synesthetic mad scientist gadgetry on and around the stage.
A limited number of tickets are available NOW via a real-time presale at http://tickets.mike-gordon.com/. Tickets will go on sale to the public beginning Friday, December 13, at 10:00 AM ET. See below for itinerary or visit the tour dates page at mike-gordon.com for further details.
Overstep is Gordon’s fourth solo album, following 2003′s Inside In, 2008′s The Green Sparrow and 2010′s Moss. Gordon is a founding member of Phish, which will wrap up 2013 with a sold-out, four-night stand at New York City’s Madison Square Garden.
