“An impeccable sophomore break-out.” – Stereogum

“It’s a rare thing when an artist scores a hat trick like this-a great melody, a genius arrangement and finely crafted lyrics.” – NPR Music

While Rayland Baxter‘s latest LP Imaginary Man gave us a keen observation of the human condition, Baxter has re-visited key tracks from the record for a new point of view on the Soho EP, which will be released February 5th digitally and off stage. Listen + Share the EP’s rendition of Mr. Rodriguez now.

The EP was recorded at Dean St Studios in London that was previously Tony Visconti’s space for recording with T. Rex, David Bowie and more. “George Harrison’s old pump organ lives in this studio and that’s what you hear along with the guitar and vocal on ‘Mr. Rodriguez’,” Baxter explained.

Lucero Debut Big Star Cover ‘I’m In Love With A Girl’

Pre-Order ‘All A Man Should Do’ Via iTunes HERE

Lucero is set to release their new album ‘All A Man Should Do‘ on September 18 via ATO Records and MapleMusic Recordings.

This new album contains some of the most resonant lyrics Ben Nichols has ever written. They read like chapters from his life: the duality of relationships, getting older, finding where you want to be in this world and more. “I was 15 years old in 1989,” Nichols explained. “This record sounds like the record I wanted to make when I was 15. It just took 25 years of mistakes to get it done.”

Lucero have included a cover close to their heartstrings on the new record: Big Star‘s ‘I’m In Love With A Girl’ and it features Big Star drummer Jody Stephens.  Working with producer Ted Hutt (Old Crow Medicine Show, Flogging Molly) for a third time at Memphis’s Ardent Studios, the band felt comfortable enough to take some chances with a palette of new tones that sound understated yet powerful, bringing life to the stories behind the lyrics without overshadowing them. The members of Sun Club became a band as childhood friends over ten years ago and with the release of a well-received 7″ and EP have toured endlessly ever since, moving from basement gigs to bars to opening up shows for the likes of AlvvaysFIDLAR, and Fat White Family.

Some of these songs have such a profound meaning to me, I can still get lost in them when played live. I sincerely hope they connect with people as much as they were intended to.” Continue reading…

Rhett Miller Reveals New Video For ‘Most In The Summertime’

RHETT_MILLER_COVER_rgb

Listen To The Track ‘Most In The Summertime’ HERE

Rhett Miller has been playing in touring bands (most notably Old 97’s) for the better part of 20 years, aka traveling from town to town for an entire generation. Thus he has definitely earned the right to title his latest solo album ‘The Traveler,’ which is out now.

A standout track from the album is ‘Most In The Summertime.’ A warm, bouncy song on the surface that has a darker undertone too. The song’s new video (directed by Max Nichols) has the same tones. Although ‘The Traveler’ was written and performed by Miller he also had some help, most notably by the members of Black Prairie, a band based in Portland that plays everything from bluegrass to klezmer to country and shares members with the Decemberists. Peter Buck of REM also added additional guitar work.

Mas Ysa Shares New Track ‘Arrows’

Pre-Order ‘Seraph’ Via iTunes HERE

Today, Mas Ysa shares a new track ‘Arrows,’ an emotional club-banger from his upcoming debut album ‘Seraph,’ out July 24 on MapleMusic Recordings.

Mas Ysa, otherwise known as Thomas Arsenault, says of the track: “‘Arrows’ is sort of a Euro club banger, but also a very personal love song. It comes out of me wanting to make a universal, club-ready track but unwittingly giving into emotion.”

Creating ‘Seraph’ took the better part of a year – it was crafted in Arsenault’s home studio, received additional production help from Steve Rivette (Liars, Black Dice) and was mixed by Grammy-nominated Damian Taylor (Björk, Arcade Fire) – but the topics it covers have been haunting the musician for his entire life. “Thematically, there’s a lot of Catholic guilt and shame,” he says of the album, which is named for a kind of angel.  “I don’t set out to use specific sounds, but looking later at the pallet of choirs, clapping, castanets, flutes – I’ve realized that they are just comforting to me. I think that comes from going to church and coming from very large and close Ecuadorian and French-Canadian families. I don’t actively reference any culture’s sound or instruments, when I noticed later they were all over the place.”
