The Belle Brigade make their MMR debut with their sophomore studio album ‘Just Because’. The album’s infectious single ‘Ashes’ dropped earlier this year whose video features the crafty sibling duo cut into stop motion. The California band recently announced a full North American tour supporting Ray LaMontagne as both his backing band and opening act. Built To Spill, Reggie Watts, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Lucius, Carl Broemel of My Morning Jacket and many more come together on ‘Bob Dylan in the 80s: Volume One’ which spans 1980′s ‘Saved’ to 1990′s ‘Under The Red Sky’. The tribute album aims to showcase Dylan during an off-peak period and bring a stronger sense of harmony to the material. Portions of proceeds from album sales will go to the charity Pencils of Promise, a non-profit organization that builds schools and increases educational opportunities in the developing world. Wonderkind: 1. A feeling of surprise caused by a person, persons or things with beautiful, unexpected, unfamiliar, or inexplicable traits. 2. A curiosity or sense of caution or suspicion due to the benevolent disposition of a person.
Language Arts is the brainchild of Toronto-based guitarist, composer and singer Kristen Cudmore. “Language Arts’ sound is really a marriage between jazz schoolers and me, the classically trained one … I attract it without realizing it,” Cudmore says about her bandmates, drummer Neil MacIntosh, keyboardist Joel Visentin and current bassist Soren Nissen (Joe Ernewein played bass in the studio).
The group’s new full-length album ‘Wonderkind,’ recorded with Grammy-nominated producer Darryl Neudorf (Neko Case, Sarah McLachlan), brilliantly marries Cudmore’s raw emotions with a dizzying array of musical styles — indie pop, hip-hop and prog-rock among them — all drawn from her boundless imagination that has become equally innovative and uplifting.
In short, ‘Wonderkind’ formally heralds the arrival of a powerful new Canadian voice, one squarely in the same league as other current iconoclastic female artists such as St. Vincent, tUnE-yArDs and Grimes.

Alabama’s legendary roots rockers Drive-By Truckers enter the double digits with their 10th studio album ‘English Oceans’. The record’s 13 tracks show an almost equal split of writing credits between co-front men Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley, watch the band perform Cooley’s track ‘Made Up English Oceans’ in the Lyric Theater in Birmingham, Alabama. The boys are on a North American tour right now supported by Blitzen Trapper and Shovels & Rope, see full dates here. Ume (pronounced “Ooo-May”) make their MMR debut with ‘Monuments‘. The Austin band play the hard rock equivalent of IDM layering meaty chords and ripping lead lines with melodic keyboard. Listen to the first single to drop from ‘Monuments’ titled ‘Chase It Down’. The very first song SomeKindaWonderful recorded together, ‘Reverse’ premiered yesterday on Idolator and is now up on iTunes. Frontman Jordy Towers tells Idolator “‘Reverse’ is a story song told in reverse. It’s a true story actually … Something about telling a story in reverse is almost more emotional and revealing to me and it just naturally came out in that form when I wrote it.”
New Releases – Silversun Pickups ‘The Singles Collection’, Rival Boys ‘Ice Storm’ EP & Mike Gordon ‘Overstep’
Ahead of their fourth studio album, the follow up to 2012′s ‘Neck Of The Woods’, Silversun Pickups look back at the musical milestones of their journey so far with ‘The Singles Collection’. The limited edition box set features the California band’s biggest hits, from ‘Lazy Eye’ to the freshly released ‘Cannibal’ pressed on 7″ vinyl. The set also includes the vinyl-exclusive track ‘Devil’s Cup’, a previously-unreleased song from the ‘Swoon’ sessions. Enter Exclaim!’s contest to win a copy of the collection here. Bassist and founding member of Phish, Mike Gordon releases his fourth solo album ‘Overstep’. A diverse but tightly knit family of sturdy rock numbers, the album features longtime collaborator Scott Murawski, legendary drummer Matt Chamberlain and is produced by Paul Q. Kolderie. The lush guitars and welcoming vocal harmonies of opener ‘Ether’ serve as an invitation to come along for a 49-minute “reality check.” Rival Boys make their MMR debut with the ‘Ice Storm’ EP, recorded in a single day at Toronto’s Revolution Recording Studios. The trio’s blend of harmonized vocals, violins, guitar, bass and propulsive drums provides stripped-down exciting rock with a punch, as heard on ‘Sober & Single’. The five track EP acts as a lead-up to their full-length album ‘animal instincts’ due for release in May. Join Rival Boys at The Silver Dollar Room February 28th for their EP release party.
“Some songs are made to fill summer stadiums as the last light falls over the crowd. Kaiser Chief’s new single “Coming Home” is one of them… reminiscent of David Byrne’s best work” - GQ
“Anthemic and immediately catchy.” - A.V. Club
“There’s an extraordinary moment when a third unfamiliar tune, ‘Coming Home,’ a U2/Kings of Leon-ish stadium-sized ballad, prompts an unexpected singalong.” - The Guardian
(Feb. 20, 2014) Today, Kaiser Chiefs unveil the music video for ‘Coming Home’ on VEVO. The song is their first single from their upcoming album, and was revealed on A.V. Club last week. ‘Education, Education, Education & War’, the band’s fifth album, will be released on April 1st, 2014 via ATO Records/MapleMusic Recordings. The ten-track collection was written in London, Los Angeles and Nashville, recorded at The Maze Studio in Atlanta, Georgia and mixed at Electric Lady Studios by Michael Brauer (My Morning Jacket, Coldplay) with producer Ben H. Allen III (Gnarls Barkley, Animal Collective, Deerhunter).
Americana legends Old 97′s return April 29 with their first album in partnership with MapleMusic Recordings/ATO Records, for ‘Most Messed Up.’
The record is a revealing, 12-track meditation on 20 years in music that finds them at their raucous, boozy best. It’s “a rock opera, a way-off Broadway musical about a musician’s life, loves and lubrication,” says music critic Bill Flanagan. Recorded in Austin and produced by Salim Nourallah, ‘Most Messed Up’ also features guest appearances by Tommy Stinson (The Replacements, Guns N’ Roses) and Jon Rauhouse (Neko Case) on lap-steel.
Chet Faker ‘Talk Is Cheap’ Video Premieres on Noisey – Full-Length Debut ‘Built On Glass’ Due April 15;
Chet Faker is set to release his debut album ’Built on Glass’ April 15th via MapleMusic Recordings and Downtown. Two years in the making it brings together all his influences from house to R&B and fuses it together with his smokey vocals. ‘Built on Glass’ will surely further cement Chet Faker as one of the most unique artists of 2014.
In 2011, Nicholas Murphy recorded a cover of ‘No Diggity’ late one night just for his friends. Shared by a handful of people, the song spread like wildfire until reaching #1 on the indie blog charts Hype Machine, and so the Chet Faker identity was born — a nod to Chet Baker’s singing style but incorporating influences from a youth spent producing house and disco.

New Orleans-based Hurray For The Riff Raff make their MapleMusic Recordings debut with ‘Small Town Heroes’. Originally from Brooklyn, HFTRR’s Alynda Lee Segarra train-hopped her way south where she formed the band along with Sam Doores and Dan Cutler of the Deslondes, among others. “Segarra’s clear-eyed, street-level portrait of her city demonstrates exactly what’s most valuable and remarkable about Hurray for the Riff Raff’s music: its commitment to truth-telling.” NPR said of the record in their First Listen coverage. Watch her full set recorded in October performing live on KEXP.

Alabama’s legendary roots rockers Drive-By Truckers return on March 4 with ‘English Oceans,’ their 10th studio album, and first since 2011′s ‘Go-Go Boots.’
The record’s 13 tracks show an almost equal split of writing credits between co-front men Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley, with the first song to be shared, ‘Made Up English Oceans,’ composed by the latter.
The band recently filmed an acoustic performance of ‘Made Up English Oceans’ at the currently-under-renovation Lyric Theater in Birmingham, Alabama. “As it is, it’s like a time capsule offering an example of the beauty of a bygone era, and the ugliness of the segregated society it was part of,” Cooley told Speakeasy. “I thought it made a perfect setting for a song about how using beliefs, fears and prejudices to acquire power still works as well as ever.”
Montreal-born producer Thomas Arsenault makes his MapleMusic Recordings debut as Mas Ysa with his ‘Worth’ EP. The album’s first single ‘Why’ received Best New Track from Pitchfork ahead of the hockey-themed & self-directed video featuring his brother Nicholas Arsenault. Mas Ysa (pronounced MAAS ee-sa) will head out on a West Coast tour with Lawrence Rothman in February and comes to Toronto for NXNE in June.
Everyone’s favourite story-teller Les Claypool has paired with his old buddy Bryan Kehoe as Duo De Twang to release their debut record ‘Four Foot Shack’. Featuring covers ranging from the best of the Primus catalogue (‘Jerry Was A Racecar Driver’ & ‘Winona’s Big Brown Beaver’) to Bee Gees ‘Stayin’ Alive’ and Alice In Chains ‘Man in The Box’ all recorded in the signature foot-stomping Americana style. “It was very live,” admits Les. “In fact, it was a little difficult, with all the bleed of the stomping and the bass and the vocals. Every now and again you can hear the studio refrigerator come on or the dog barking at something outside in the background. Once it was there, you had to kind of leave it.” Duo De Twang tour the U.S. in March along with a stop at the SXSW festival that month.
